Fire resistant safes are designed to protect contents by preventing internal temperatures rising above a certain level for a specified period of time even when external temperatures can be very high because of fire.
Fire resistance for these safes is expressed by the time period the interior is designed to stay below a critical temperature and withstand the high temperatures of a fire. They are typically rated 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes etc. Different types of media such as paper, image media and digital media will have different ratings as critical temperatures vary between them.
For example, paper will start to curl and show discoloration at about 176 °C so a fire resistant safe will indicate how long paper storage will remain intact for even if external fire temperatures are around 1000 °C.
The BS EN-1047 standard in the UK specifies the ability of a safe to withstand intense heat over a period of time for document and data safes. For document safes the internal temperature is to be no more than 176 °C while in a constantly heated environment in excess of 1000 °C such as a fire. Data safes have a different standard because damage occurs as a lower temperature. In this case the internal temperature is to be no more that 55 °C while in a constantly heated environment in excess of 1000 °C.
It should be noted that while fire resistant safes are rated for protection against fire they are not necessarily water proof. Water damage can be caused when the fire services are trying to put out the fire so they should not be fixed at low levels or under the floor.
